Opportunity Snapshot

The ability to create a quantum leap in an organization's performance and influence others to embrace organizational change is the sine qua non for leadership. If you have what it takes to really harness the power of change, here is your opportunity to showcase your Lean Six Sigma expertise -- preferably in a process environment -- and make a significant and highly visible impact at a world-class biomedical testing company with a legacy of innovation and integrity. . .

Beckman Coulter is the leading provider of clinical instrumentation that makes a difference in saving and improving the quality of lives around the world. We are currently in the midst of an exciting transformation, and are transitioning from a conventional to a Lean-centric organization. In fact, the Lean initiative is in its infancy at our Carlsbad manufacturing site, and we're now seeking a Lean Leader who can plan, implement, coordinate and drive Lean Six Sigma improvement activities throughout the site and optimize our manufacturing supply chain for reagent products.

This is an enterprise-wide initiative and you'll get to work alongside the best and brightest professionals, including other functional/business leaders and Lean champions throughout our organization to "make Lean happen" and push us to the next level.

What Else Is in It for You

  • Ground-floor opportunity -- since the Lean initiative is so new at the Carlsbad site, there's plenty of "low hanging fruit" for you to grab as you track down the hidden opportunities to: increase productivity; reduce inventory; and increase available square footage while make your mark on our growing organization.
  • Challenge & diversity -- far from being pigeonholed into a specific functional area, you'll be working with cross-functional groups--including Supply Chain, Quality, IT & HR--across the site and have plenty of opportunity to flex your mental agility and drive results.
  • Career development -- advancement opportunities and diverse career paths are trademarks of the Beckman Coulter experience, and as you master your accountabilities, you'll be ideally positioned to evolve along multiple career paths, both at Carlsbad and throughout Beckman Coulter.
  • Empowerment -- we'll entrust you with the freedom and flexibility to drive your own processes to meet our manufacturing objectives and achieve success; we'll provide you support when you need it and plenty of "elbow room" when you don't.
  • Best of both worlds -- you'll enjoy the camaraderie and close-knit environment of our small 300-person Carlsbad site, but also benefit from the resources and support of our 2.5 billion dollar parent company headquartered in Fullerton.
  • Excellent benefits -- in addition to a very competitive salary and bonus opportunity, we offer a robust benefits package that includes low-cost health insurance coverage for you and your family; matching 401(k) as well as a retirement account plan; stock purchase options; paid vacation and holidays; tuition assistance; and more.

What You'll Bring to the Table

  • Bachelor's degree in Industrial or Process Engineering.
  • Minimum 5-7 years experience in manufacturing, supply chain and high transaction environments; must have proven track record of financial savings resulting from the application of business process improvement methodologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead the organization through incremental change.
  • Strong leadership, project management and tracking skills coupled with the ability to lead and facilitate cross-functional Six Sigma project teams to drive improvements in supply chain planning, sourcing, customer service and operations.
  • Advanced competency in industry standard manufacturing methodologies (i.e. Lean, Six Sigma and integrated planning systems).
  • Excellent analytical skills with a strong working knowledge of problem solving, root cause analysis and associated solution implementation.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities; must be able to synthesize complex statistical data into succinct reports and present to both technical & non-technical audiences.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (including Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Visio).
Preferred, but not required:
  • MBA or IE.
  • Certified Six Sigma Black Belt or Lean Master.
  • Experience in job shop and/or flow manufacturing environment.
  • Financial acumen and ability to calculate cost benefit analysis and ROI.

More About Your Role

You will report directly to the Carlsbad Site Manager with a dotted line to the Corporate Lean Champion. Your mission: to make Lean Six Sigma principals an integral part of our operations, including training, developing and implementing processes and procedures and following through to ensure effective and lasting changes.

As the leader handling a change initiative, you won't avoid the resistance and emotions that accompany the change process; in fact you will set a positive tone, energize the team around a unified vision--almost like a transfusion into the team's arteries--as you build trust and create productive partnerships in which everyone can offer their unique knowledge and talents.

This is a hands-on leadership role and you'll be required to "wear many hats", including both strategic and tactical roles. Initially, you'll be spending about 80% of your time with roll-up-your sleeves tactical activities, such as conducting gap analysis and designing value stream maps; and the remaining 20% with strategic planning tasks. Your specific activities are to:
  • Provide project leadership to process teams; develops goals, plans and schedules that ensure alignment among processes and decrease production time.
  • Provide periodic presentations demonstrating progress toward goals; and meet or exceed the agreed upon Lean performance measures.
  • Collaborate with the Site Manager to determine priorities, resource allocation, measurements and goals; these goals are attained using Lean Six Sigma principles to create value stream maps, minimize waste within processes and understand process capability and variation.
  • Work with the Site Manager to determine when to engage company experts and resources outside of the site to solve problems and improve processes.
  • Manage relationships with vendors, consultants, contractors, and professional associations to keep informed with existing and evolving industry standards and technologies.
  • Communicate and proactively work supply chain issues that can have company wide impact.

Keys to Success

Pivotal to your success in this role is your ability to take a hands-on approach to getting the data you need and drive effective and lasting change. You'll also rely on your "emotional" intelligence to build consensus across department lines and influence those over whom you have no direct authority. You will be able to bring and inspire new ideas for improvements in our facility, challenge the status quo, and motivate diverse stakeholders to embrace these initiatives and achieve supply chain excellence. Other facets of success are to:
  • Strike an appropriate balance between taking care of day-to-day activities and bringing forward new ideas and concepts for improving efficiency and productivity.
  • Remain proactive in getting the data you need for Lean & Six Sigma initiatives.
  • Maintain a high energy level and energize others as you hold them accountable to their goals and drive results.
  • Achieve your objectives independently while keeping your supervisor in the loop.
  • Remain adaptive and ready to shift priorities as the need arises; what happened yesterday is not necessarily what will happen tomorrow.
If this sounds like the right mix of challenge and opportunity for you, and you meet the minimum qualifications, we want to hear from you!
