You'll be walking into the planning stage of this project and we'll expect you to hit the ground running and create the momentum to get the first release launched by 2010.

At a high level, you will spend about 30% of your time with strategic planning; another 40% driving the plan forward on a day-to-day basis; and the remaining 30% managing collaboration between cross-functional sites and partners. Specifically your responsibilities are to:
  • Develop a strategic product roadmap with cross-functional teams.
  • Coordinate and prioritize product development activities with functional business partners.
  • Assemble the Product Development team required to make this happen.
  • Oversee the design, development, verification and validation of design to ensure the timely completion of products at projected costs within specified performance parameters.
  • Establish and approve operational objectives and assignments, delegating assignments to staff.
  • Lead multifunctional project teams and manage scientific, engineering, technical and product development staff
  • Forecast staffing requirements across functional units; develop resource strategies, allocating budgets, staff, tools, and specialized support needed for cost-effective operations.
  • Develop and motivate staff; conduct employee accountability sessions at regular and frequent intervals and create appropriate interventions and disciplinary practices for non-productive employees.
  • Approve and/or terminate external resources (contractors).
  • Develop and maintain strong collaborative partnerships with other companies, academic institutions and opinion leaders.
  • Keep a pulse on new technologies, competition, customer needs, etc. to anticipate future new product development needs.
  • Review and monitor operating budgets.
  • Ensure all FDA, ISO and related regulatory requirements are consistently met.

Keys to Success

The best and most sustainable innovation occurs where creativity intersects with customer needs and pivotal to your success in this role is your ability to champion the overall product development vision; leverage your emotional intelligence to build consensus across department lines; influence those over whom you have no direct authority; and roll out the vision in a timely manner. Other facets of success are to:
  • Strike an appropriate balance between high-level strategic thinking and hands-on execution of the implementation details.
  • Integrate well with a multi-site team; you will showcase your team player abilities to collaborate extensively with a virtual team.
  • Manage effectively to multiple objectives, looking at issues from many different angles and weighing a range of factors and trade-offs in developing strategies.
  • Constantly survey customer needs and competitive landscape to stay abreast of what is new and successful and quickly determine if and how this knowledge can be harnessed at Beckman Coulter
  • Bring a high-energy approach, sense of urgency, and solid focus to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic, growth-oriented environment; what happened yesterday is not necessarily what will happen tomorrow.
If this sounds like the right mix of challenge and opportunity for you, and you meet the minimum qualifications, we want to hear from you!
