This is a high impact, high visibility opportunity to showcase your Six Sigma and Quality Assurance expertise to support the Supply Chain Value Engineering group at a world-class biomedical testing company.

Welcome to Beckman Coulter, the leading provider of clinical instrumentation that makes a difference in saving and improving the quality of lives around the world! Our Value Engineering Group focuses primarily on cost savings from redesign of existing products in our production line and we are now seeking a Six Sigma Black Belt -- preferably with experience in the manufacture of instrumentation products or electro-mechanical devices -- who can provide both Six Sigma and quality assurance support as you manage the entire process from redesign to implementation and help us achieve our cost and quality targets.

This is a hands-on leadership role and if you have what it takes to position yourself as a positive catalyst for change and influence the team to embrace Six Sigma methodologies, you'll find that our environment is replete with a variety of rewards including:
  • High impact -- by applying Six Sigma and good quality assurance practices in an engineering environment, you will help us continue to be scalable and adaptable while "making your mark" on our growing organization.
  • Autonomy and support -- while we'll look to you to achieve your goals with minimal supervision, the Value Engineering Group works collaboratively to help one another resolve issues. You'll have support when you need it and independence when you don't.
  • Career development -- advancement opportunities and diverse career paths are trademarks of the Beckman Coulter experience, and as you master your accountabilities, you'll be ideally positioned to evolve along multiple career paths.
  • Great work environment -- we pride ourselves on our scientific expertise and cutting-edge technologies and have created a culture that is open, collaborative, and results-oriented with leadership committed to quality and regulatory compliance.
  • Excellent benefits -- in addition to a very competitive salary and bonus opportunity, we offer a robust benefits package that includes low-cost health insurance coverage for you and your family; matching 401(k) as well as a retirement account plan; stock purchase options; paid vacation and holidays; tuition assistance; and more.

Our Requirements

  • Six Sigma Black Belt Certification ( or prior Six Sigma experience and ability to certify within 8 months).
  • A BS in Life Science, Statistics or Engineering discipline.
  • Minimum 5 years of related experience in quality and/or engineering at a systems level.
  • Hands-on product engineering experience.
  • Strong leadership skills with proven experience facilitating Six Sigma projects and mentoring teams on the use of Six Sigma tools.
  • Project management skills including project oversight, resource identification, budget management, scheduling and planning.
  • Impeccable interpersonal finesse including solid negotiation, influencing & facilitative skills.
  • Experience with hardware test verification and validation in a regulated (FDA/FAA/ISO) environment.
Preferred, but not required:
  • Design For Six Sigma certification and experience.
  • ASQ certification.
  • MSEE or MSME

More About Your Role

This is an individual contributor role and you will report to the Director, Six Sigma--with a dotted line to the Director of Value Engineering--as you join us at the Brea office.

As you can imagine, this is a hit the ground running position and after a short "breaking in" period, we'll expect you to assimilate within our team and effectively leverage resources within the company to perform at full-speed. In addition to assuming ownership of current quality systems, your mission will be to identify opportunities and innovations to drive continuous improvement. Specifically, your responsibilities are to:
  • Be the subject-matter expert in Six Sigma for the Value Engineering group.
  • Provide Six Sigma support to the Value Engineering group, including data analysis and facilitation of DMAIC and Design for Six Sigma tools.
  • Provide quality assurance direction on engineering projects and support for design changes.
  • Lead verification and validation of Value Engineering projects.
  • Maintain and prioritize laboratory and test resources in support of Value Engineering.
  • Lead benchmarking and robust assessment of competitive designs.

Keys to Success

Your success in this role will depend upon your ability to influence diverse stakeholders as you leverage your interpersonal savvy to gain credibility; you will showcase tact and diplomacy as you deal with staff that may have strong opinions and be able to build consensus across departmental lines. You will be able to bring and inspire new ideas for improvements in our quality capabilities, challenge the status quo, and motivate others to embrace these initiatives and achieve engineering excellence. Other facets of success are to:
  • Strike an appropriate balance between taking care of day-to-day activities and bringing forward new ideas and concepts for improving efficiency and productivity.
  • Function effectively as a team player, participating in or leading cross-functional teams, but also work well independently.
  • Maintain a high energy level & sense of urgency to manage multiple issues and drive them each to resolution; we've fostered a fertile environment where a lot of good ideas get started but you'll also have the discipline to follow through and ensure completion.
  • Remain adaptive and ready to shift priorities as the need arises.
If this sounds like the right mix of challenge and opportunity for you, and you meet the minimum qualifications, we want to hear from you!
