Senior Product Development Engineer
CA - Brea
Opportunity Snapshot
Showcase your product development engineering expertise and user centered design background as you drive the redesign of clinical diagnostic products from concept creation to commercialization.
This is a high impact corporate-wide role that combines hands-on design engineering and project management, and you will gain valuable exposure to an evolving spectrum of products from all parts of the company. Our fast paced design cycles provide an added bonus in that you'll get instant gratification from seeing your own best design engineering work come to life in products that make a difference in saving and improving the quality of lives around the world!
Spanning the biomedical testing continuum -- from pioneering medical research and clinical trials to laboratory diagnostics and point-of-care testing -- Beckman Coulter's 200,000 installed systems provide essential biomedical information to enhance health care around the world. Riding high off our robust first quarter sales and fueled by our recession resilient product portfolio, we're poised for double digit growth as we continue our upward trajectory in an otherwise unstable economy. Our Value Engineering department is a high powered startup group that has the executive level support to bring your innovative ideas to life as you interface with cross functional sites to help us meet and exceed our cost reduction and quality targets.
What You'll Bring to the Table
- A Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline from a top tier engineering school.
- 5+ years of related experience with a track record of making substantial contributions to the design, development and commercialization of successful products.
- Fluency in at least one solid modeling CAD package (preferable SolidWorks).
- Strong leadership and influencing skills with the ability to lead and facilitate cross-site functional groups.
- Solid written and verbal communication skills to interface with customers, vendors and individuals at all levels of the organization.
- The ability to work independently and also function effectively as a team player.
- Excellent organizational and multitasking skills with the ability to drive multiple projects to completion in a timely manner.
Preferred, but not required.
- Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- Electro-mechanical experience in embedded systems and/or software.
- Clinical instrumentation design experience is a plus.
- Some DFSS background is a plus.
What's in It for You
- Influence & impact -- by implementing and driving value engineering principles you will help us continue to be scalable and adaptable while "making your mark" on our growing organization.
- Challenge, variety & skill development - far from being pigeonholed into a particular niche, this unique role will provide exposure to a variety of design experiences and allow you to further develop your technical skills.
- Broad visibility -- you'll partner with many areas of our organization including all Engineering functions, as well as Sourcing, Manufacturing and Quality. These interactions will provide you valuable insight into our business and extensive recognition for your accomplishments.
- Career development -- advancement opportunities and diverse career paths are trademarks of the Beckman Coulter experience, and as you master your accountabilities, you'll be ideally positioned to evolve along multiple career paths.
- Great work environment -- we pride ourselves on our scientific expertise and cutting-edge technologies and have created a culture that is open, collaborative, and results-oriented with leadership committed to innovation and quality.
- Excellent benefits -- in addition to a very competitive salary and bonus opportunity, we offer a robust benefits package that includes low-cost health insurance coverage for you and your family; matching 401(k) as well as a retirement account plan; stock purchase options; paid vacation and holidays; tuition assistance; and more.
More About Your Role
This is an individual contributor role and you will report to the Value Engineering Leader as you join seven other peers at the Brea site and also work extensively with your counterparts in Miami and Indianapolis.
As you can imagine, this is a hit the ground running type of position and after a short "breaking in" period, we'll expect you to assimilate within our team and effectively leverage resources within the company to perform at full-speed. You'll take the lead on 1 to 5 projects concurrently which may last anywhere from a couple of days to a year, and will manage each project from conception to prototyping and all the way through to validation, testing and production. At a high level, you will spend about 75% of your time on design engineering projects and the remaining 25% on project management activities. Specifically, your responsibilities are to:
- Conceive, develop and implement broad product design concepts and new core technological capabilities for mechanical systems.
- Provide technical engineering leadership of mechanical systems for product development teams, using CAD/CAE tools as appropriate.
- Conduct theoretical and empirical analyses of complex core technology or mechanical systems.
- Review overall design, specifications and experimental designs to ensure efficacy, feasibility and compliance.
- Participate on multi-mechanical engineering development teams and lead teams to improve product development processes and/or resolve issues.
Keys to Success
Your success in this role will naturally require solid product engineering prowess and an innovative approach to solving complex mechanical problems, but also important are your:
- Eye for the "big picture" -- we'll look to you to add value and inspire excellence by seeing beyond our current products and processes to generate new insights and ideas, find alternate approaches, and discover new avenues worth pursuing.
- Team player mentality -- you will rely on the assistance of various groups throughout the organization in order to achieve your objectives, requiring effective communication, interpersonal, and relationship building skills as you collaborate with remote sites to build consensus across departmental lines.
- Strong follow-through -- we operate in a fast paced environment which calls for a high energy level and sense of urgency to manage multiple issues and consistently follow through on your commitments.
- Adaptability - you'll be part of a startup group that has only been in existence for six months which will allow you the freedom to be creative, but will also require you to remain adaptable and proactively find your own unique solutions in situations where no defined protocol exists.
If this sounds like the right mix of challenge and opportunity for you, and you meet the minimum qualifications, we want to hear from you!
